Abstract | Not only the lake resources have conventionally played a significant role in improvement of the rural households' livelihood, but also it has shared a role in State economic of Orissa, India. Its role however becomes over weaker, compared to the last 10 years because of the capture fisheries resources have recently declined. Particular the brackish water fisheries have depleted considerably during this decade due to the pressures on lake resource has increased. It is small part from the destruction of interventional practices by local inhabitants and a large part from the absence of the appropriate local institutions for lake resource management, while the management framework of government line department was poorly enforced. This study is undertaken to indicate the effects of lake resource on the livelihood of the community. The study has analyzed the impact of resource degradation, changing policy, encroachment of the lake area for shrimp culture and opening of the new mouth on the livelihood of the local people. It has also studied the role and performances of the institutions, NGOs and overall the role and conservative actions taken by Chilika Development Authority for restoration of lake ecology and sustainable management of lake resources. The study has covered three villages that are totally dependent, partially dependent and not at all dependent on the lake resources for their earning livelihood. The study findings show that the economic status of the villagers who are not depending on the lake resources is better than the dependent villagers. Resource degradation has its negative impact on the economy of the dependent community. Though Chilika Development Authority has taken up many conservation measures for sustaining the lake resources but it doesn't succeed in managing the lake resource in sound way. There are several conflicts and law and order problems in the study area. As the community for years suffering from poverty for the above, the study has recommended for the sustainable management of the lake besides suggesting the conservation measures, community participation and providing alternatives to fishermen community rather than fishing. |
