Abstract | Sissoo (Dalbergia sissoo Roxb.) is a very fast growing multipurpose tree species in Bangladesh and has been planted extensively around the country both in homestead and roadside plantations. Growth performance of the species has been very good all over the country. But recently out broken mortality of the species has threatened existence of the species all over the country. Lack of effort for proper prevention/control of this situation has made the situation more aggravated, though few researches have been done in small scale, but related to pathology only and without concerning impact of bioenvironmental phenomena. This created serious problem resulted in massive loss of the large plantation stock in the country. In this situation, research related to mortality and productivity of the species is imperative to resolve this national problem as well as to meet the country's wood fuel demands. This study focuses on some important bioenvironmental phenomena highly considered to affect mortality and productivity (volume increment) of Dalbergia sissoo. Five districts have been selected to carry out this exploratory research in Bangladesh-three from northern region and two from south-western region of the country, where sissoo plantations have been carried out in a large scale. Mortality analyses of sissoo were performed with some key bioenvironmental factors viz. planting density, plantation types, soil chemical properties, soil physical properties, age of plantation and region by using categorical tests, correlation analysis and multiple regression. This helps to understand the actual magnitude of sissoo mortality and the implications of the factors towards m01iality of the species in the study area. The study also carries out productivity analysis of sissoo using the above factors in the study area as a means to have an idea about the current stock of sissoo plantation in the study area and to understand the influence of the bioenvironmental factors to wards productivity of the species. Here analyses were also performed by categorical tests, correlation analysis and multiple regression as well. Finally, multiple regression analysis explained the overall magnitude of influence of all the factors concerning mortality and productivity of sissoo. This will lead to identify most important biophysical factors affecting mortality and productivity of sissoo through a process of elimination of unimportant factors. The final outcome of this semi-detailed study will certainly help to draw future plantation strategy of Dalbergia sissoo and planning for future management interventions for this valuable species in Bangladesh until emergence of very detail study on bioenvironmental factors related to mortality and productivity of the species, which will lead to protection of this valuable species. |
