AbstractThe statistics of the road accidents in Vietnam show that the number of accidents has been steadily increasing. The number of persons killed and injured has multiplied at alarming level. Severe injury to body areas such as the head trauma is predominant. This study focuses on the road traffic accidents in which victims suffered head injury. The main purpose is to analyse the characteristics and patterns of head trauma in traffic accidents. In addition, Cluster and Discriminant Analysis were used to identify and classify head trauma based on multiple variables. Data analysis includes 266 patients with head trauma treated during the first six months of the year 2001 at ChoRay and CanTho hospital in the south of Vietnam. Data was also collected from records of X Ray at ChoRay, Cantho and TienGiang hospital. The results from the characteristics analysis show that the injury frequency peaks occurred in January. The male victims were predominant 82%. Age group of victim 18 to 27 was highest 28.2%, next age 28 to 3 7 was 24.1 %. Type of road user, motorcycles dominated victims 73.6%, next 17.6% of pedestrians. The influence of alcohol intoxicated persons was 8.8%. The results from exposure analysis of ChoRay sample (big hospital) and ChoTho hospital (smaller hospital) was. Average age of ChoRay group (31.2 years) was higher than average age of CanTho group (26.1 years). Average defected area of ChoRay group was 51.6 Cm2 , Can Tho group was 18.3 Cm2 . Frequency of trauma location, temporal was the highest 35.7 % with the highest average age 36.2 years, and the lowest was Occipital 4.1 % with the lowest average age 14.3 years. The largest average defected area was Temporal-Frontal with 62.75 Cm2 , occupied 4.1 %, and the smallest area was Occipital 10 Cm2 , occupied 2.6 %. Ratio of left head trauma was 42.1 %, right 53. 8% and middle (Frontal) 4.1 %. The results of special analysis by Cluster and Discriminant analysis created 3 distinct groups. Group 1 (High Hazardous Group), 2.6 %, Group 2 (Hazardous Group), Group 3 (Low Hazardous Group), 82.0 %.
