Abstract | Increasing customer demands, globalization, deregulation, limited resources, and the advance
of information technology are among the major forces shaping today's competitive business
enviromnent. These forces gave bi1ih to the Supply Chain Management concept, which helps
supply chains manage supply processes to satisfy customers in a most beneficial and
competitive manner. Product development is a critical phase of supply process since it
determines product functionality, product costs and quality, and product time-to-market.
Concurrent Engineering has been widely recognized in the literature as an approach to slash
time, lower cost, and increase product quality simultaneously.
Pressures are more intense in high-tech industries of short life cycle products. These products
are normally complex, and new generations are frequently introduced in response to changing
requirements in product functionality. Besides, customers demand lower cost and higher quality
products. It means that efficient product development processes are required along supply
chains rather than in isolated manufacturers. Joint utilization of Concurrent Engineering and
Supply Chain Management concepts is proposed as an approach for the requirement. This thesis
work studies a case of development of high-tech, complex, and sho1i life cycle products in real
world. A method is developed afterwards as an attempt to introduce a tool capable of guiding
manufacturers on the way to improve their product development processes towards the
achievement of supply chain product goals. |
