Abstract | Day River Basin located in the middle reach of Red River Delta of Vietnam was important component in flood control plan of the delta. The basin was used for flood diversion to safeguard the vast low-lying lands downstream of the delta from flooding. The riverbed siltation and the land reclamation have led to rapid deterioration of the flood diversion. and flood storage function. Water resources are also not enough to meet the requirements of different economic sectors in the basin due to the main supplying source from Red River in dry season was no longer available since the construction of Day Dam. The hydraulic model MIKE 11 was use in this thesis to investigate the flood condition of the basin. Different diversion discharges from 1000 to 5000 m3 Is were simulated by the model to investigate the inundation and damage situation in Day Basin. It was found that the maximum damage in the basin could be amounted up to more than $US 148 Million correspond with maximum diversion discharge of 5000 m3 Is. Water demand by different economic sectors such as domestic, agriculture, industry and, environment was also investigated to estimate the present requirement and projecting future needs. Water from external source should be diverted in to Day Basin in dry season to fulfill these needs. A maximum discharge of 160 CMS should be the sustainable discharge which enough to cover the water requirements beyond 2020. |
