AbstractWater-based settlement is a unique form of traditional settlements in Thailand. It depicts the water-based lifestyle of people and their culture. However, this uniqueness is severely affected by haphazard urban expansion, road developments, and other encroachments. This study focuses on revitalizing Koh Kred, which is a water-based settlement affected by such external forces. Koh Kred is a water-based community as well as a famous destination for cultural tourism. It has been influenced by the deleterious impacts from unregulated urbanization and tourism. The impacts are in the form of local economic decline, cultural decline and environmental degradation. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to find out the appropriate solutions to revitalize the water-based community at Koh Kred in order to reach sustainability. This is in line with the National Environment Board's (NEB) aim to promote the "years of rivers and canal conservation (2001-2003)" in order to conserve the natural and cultural environment of water-based communities. Through analyzing the prioritized issues, the study makes recommendations for revitalization of Koh Kred. Cooperation between community and local government is suggested as a mechanism to revitalize Koh Kred.
