AbstractThe goal of this thesis is to study the feasibility of manufacturing a new biocompatible stainless steel hip prosthesis head by turning. The process performance of turning on dimensional accuracy and surface roughness was determined. Factors affecting the desired surface quality such as work hardening and tool wear were also investigated. Taguchi method was used to obtain the best cutting condition with a minimal number of experiments. In these experiments, cutting speed, feed rate, cutting tool material, depth of cut were found to affect the specimen surface roughness. Then, the optimized values of all parameters were obtained.
