AbstractFlooding in urban areas is an inevitable problem in many cities in Asia. To overcome this problem, the sewer and drainage systems play a significant role in metropolitan areas. However, inadequate design and maintenance of these systems causes severe economic and environmental damage. Reasons for this could be inadequate flow capacity of the drainage systems or sewers resulting in flooding of residential or commercial areas. Further, the rapid or unplanned development of the cities in Asia and related infrastructures is a challenge for the management of urban drainage system. Combined with the reduction of water storage and percolation areas, flooding and water logging from local rainfall have reached a dangerous magnitude for cities in Southeast Asia. Making the problems worse, spreading of diseases occurs when urban area flood regularly because moist soil provides a good environment for worm eggs to flourish, and flood water in open drains spreads eggs to new victims. Modelling of urban flooding in Dhaka City was successfully carried out in 2001. The study relied on a hydrodynamic model, MOUSE, built with two exchangeable networks, pipe and street flows. However, more modern cities in the Asian Region, where drainage system is more complex, significantly differ from Dhaka. Differences are higher degree of urbanization and higher cost associated with flooding. The methodology from Dhaka City was applied to Bangkok sub-catchment, Sukhumvit, to evaluate the applicability and to derive a more general approach for modelling of urban flooding. A Digital Elevation Model was established for generation of flood inundation maps in catchment areas to evaluate results for various alleviation schemes. In addition, the cost of flood was estimated, based on land use and property maps in order to assess the damage. It was found that the methodology of modelling of urban flooding from Dhaka City is suitable for Sukhumvit. Due to the complexity, a size of the area and number of input data, additional automatic procedures are necessary for modelling of the Sukhumvit area and to save time for model formulation. The applicability of modelling methodology for urban flooding with a one-dimensional approach remains valid under an assumption that depth and velocity vary only in the longitudinal direction of pipes, canals and streets. During higher flood or in steep catchment, when water level is high enough to flow across the flood cells or streets, two-dimensional approach then has to be applied for flood plain or surface flow simulation.
