AbstractIn developing countries like India, most of the construction small contractors forget the importance of the managerial functions which hinder their ability to evolve into larger companies. The purpose of the thesis to find the management practice adopted by the successful small contractors and turn these capabilities into a competitive advantage. The managerial functions are detailed in the part of literature review. The practices adopted by unsuccessful contractors are compared to that of successful companies to shine the spotlight on the critical attributes of the practices in which the in experienced companies have focused on. All the construction companies included in this thesis mostly bid for government contracts. The Management functions included in this thesis are not purely based only on the project perspective, but viewing the necessary managerial skills required by the construction companies to thrive in the construction industry, outperforming its competitors. Due to rapid increase in the number of contractors in India, the competition has widely increased, the companies come up with various strategies to out-do their competitors but forget focusing on the management functions of the company itself, which are very crucial for organization to thrive.
