AbstractWith the increasing crisis in food security, livelihoods, natural resources for the world population, a more sustainable agricultural system needs to be established. Farmers, as an important component within agriculture systems, play a critical role in the transition to sustainable agriculture. However, such a transition, to a large extent, was associated with farmers’ awareness and attitudes toward sustainable agriculture. An empirical study to investigate farmers’ awareness, attitudes and behaviors toward sustainable agriculture is urgently needed. This case study was conducted in three agricultural systems (rice, cassava, and vegetable farming) of Northeastern Thailand, aiming to respond to the above need. The research results showed that farmers’ awareness and behaviors toward SA are at a moderate level. The results of farmers’ multiple linear regression analysis showed that several factors: household size, access to agriculture extension services, provision of agricultural credits and funds, and promotion of organic agriculture, significantly influence farmers’ sustainable agriculture awareness. Moreover, the results from simple linear regression analysis demonstrated that farmers’ awareness of sustainable agriculture significantly associated with farmers’ attitudes toward sustainable agriculture and farmers’ individual behavior toward sustainable agriculture also significantly influenced farmers’ collective behaviors toward sustainable agriculture. Based on the above findings, more context-in sustainable agriculture knowledge transfer and communication for the adoption of sustainable agriculture for farmers at the local level, are suggested.
