Abstract | The Priority Tree Species (PTS) was practiced in February 2002 to find out the highest priority species to tree plantation in order to promote local people in the study area involve to household tree planting programs (HTPPs). In additional, is to solve problems as restore forest ecosystems in degraded area for conservation biodiversity in the southern part of Lao PDR. This study describes on species reference by local people matching with site condition as social parameters and physical, environmental parameter in order to get the high priority species for tree planting programs. A research study was considered on type of use, market preference, species preference, ease and cost of establishing tree plantation. Out of which preferences, local participation, satisfaction was also to consider. A result was found out to screen 5 species, of which three native forest tree species (Tectona grandis, Pterocarpus and Hopea odorata) was higher priority and two species (Eucalyptua camandulensis and Dipterocmpus alatus) was low. The study has been surveyed the potential forests/ seed sources by consideration on criteria of mother trees as density of mother trees, stand form, health, age, regeneration and seed production. In the implementing survey of mother trees survey was something problems due to some of criteria was not available in the research. However, the results showed that forest was of 7 and 9 of seed sources. Of which 5forests/ 5 seed source was Dipterocmpus alatus, 1 seed source was Hopea odorata and 3 of Pterocarpus macrocarpus. These seed sources can be provided more than 17 Ton of clean seeds/ year. This study also considers what parameters are to be the potential barriers on seed sources management in that area. It was very hard to measure. Even though, was considered on accessibility (road condition and communication), ownership and use right (Forest and land use), community based management activities (market, price, incentives (budget), technical skill, government policy/ village rule, labor and also time), and community conflict of interests. In the local preferences were many barriers were to be urgency of problem and some of barriers can be solved by local institution. The most efficient outcome of this study is the invitation to revise the currently adopted methods in priority tree species and sites for household tree planting programs taking both social and biophysical parameters into consideration. Until emergence of very detail study on socio-economic and biophysical factor delineating species selection, this semi-detailed level suitability study will act as an alternative measure in species priority by which rigorous conflicts between local community and forest officials will be minimized while forest conservation and management efforts will be maximized. |
