Abstract | The purposes of the study are to assess the biological factors of the Dongnatat Conservation Area (DCA), Savannakhet Province, Lao PDR and social factors of the villagers nearby, and to develop a management plan for seed source establishment in the area. The two villages of Khanthabouly district, Ban That and Ban Phonsim, are selected as the samples. The biological factors are obtained from forest inventory and forest profiles. Ten transect plots are randomly selected in which four of the plots are located in the mixed deciduous forest and the other six plots are located in the dry evergreen forest. Four native species (Dipterocarpus alatus, Afzelia xylocarpa, Hopea ferrea, and Anisoptera costata) are selected to see whether the DCA has a potential to be a seed source or not. Stratified sampling is used to select the participants in the interview: the village headman, the village leaders, and the ordinary male and female villagers. The results of the study present a potential of the DCA as a seed source for the three species in study. The three species are Dipterocarpus alatus, Hopea ferrea, and Anisoptera costata. The biophysical factors and tree health indicate that the mixed deciduous forest has more potential than the dry evergreen forest in terms of being the seed source. However, the appropriate management plan, such as thinning, will help to improve the conditions of the dry evergreen forest for being the seed source. The social factors show that the villagers are willing to participate in the future seed source management in the DCA. However, they need to be trained in seed collection and area maintenance and protection. The management plan is developed for the DCA improvement. The recommendations for seed source selections are proposed too. |
