Abstract | In Taiwan, people have suffered from many natural disasters and declining environmental
quality recently, The main causes are urbanization and industrialization, agricultural and
economic activity expansion, and lack of environmental awareness. People are always under
the fear of shortage of resource, invasion of disaster and suffering bad quality environment.
For many evidences, the development will revoke the deterioration, but in the contrast way, it
will hinder the economic benefits. It is a dilemma between conservation of resources and
development. These cause people to think about 'What happens to our environment? And
what should we do?'
Environmental education becomes an important solution. Environmental education is to build
the public environmental consciences and enforce them to take the positive attitude and
responsibility toward environmental issue. Except the existing formal education system in
school, NGOs may have a significant role in informal environmental education.
The SOW's E.E. has broader impact to environmental conservation, due to its various types
of activities. From the sixth occasion interpreter training program, nature experience has
significant impact on members' attitude changed to conservation. Emphasize nature
experience and nature ethic will benefit participant's good experience and to get close with
others, but results in deficiency of nature knowledge. For an interpreter-training program, it is
an inadequate development. It's a benefit/cost in the EE. The formal education system and
informal sector do not ignore this trade-off in the environmental education.
For this interpreter training program in SOW's E. E., the leader play a significant role in the
curriculum design, the trainer is an important catalyst to improve the program active. The
human resource is the main factor to influence the program; it needs to promote their
communicative skill to make sure the successful outcomes. This training program is under the
experimental stage, its curriculum content is not systemized, and it wastes lots of time and ·
energy in deficiency discussion. The education committee of SOW needs to develop a well
systematic curriculum in E.E., also prepare their own instructors from series training and
cultivate good communicative trainers.
Though this environmental education may have some deficiencies, it has the advantages to
improve the nature conservation to guarantee the sustainable natural resource development in
Taiwan. It fosters the understanding of the relationship between the environment,
development, and then with the human health and social well being. For the time being, it still
needs public participation from formal to informal education system to be involved into the
environmental education reform. The more participation it has, the more social concerns to
environment would be evoked. Finally, the anticipated sound natural environment with self-adjustable
functions would come back again into our reality. This is also the ultimate goal of
all kinds of environmental education program as well. |
