Abstract | Petroleum industry is one of the most complex, large-scale and competitive industries where new advances in automation technology are applied continuously. These high degree modern technological advances are playing an ever-increasing patt in helping to improve safety, environment, reliability and economic performance of the petroleum plants. This study covers the application of Distributed Control System technology in the Petroleum Terminal Automation System that includes many geographically dispersed workstations and requires applying control successfully, guarantee and safety. In the petroleum plant distributed control systems with several controller (each with their own processor) are operating simultaneously and cooperatively. To manage the entire plant, the study also propose the automation network in which tightly coupled multiprocessor systems can share a command bus and loosely coupled processor-based systems (e.g. computers, PLCs, etc.) can interconnect by using SIMATIC NET communication, developed by SIEMENS. The study covers the designing and programming of an automation control system model using the automation technologies of Process Control System software (PCS7) to handle the process and utility system, and the Human Machine Interface with Windows Control Center (WinCC) provided by SIEMENS. This model is very useful in the operation and monitoring of the process, providing a HMI that allows graphics-oriented-output, e.g. process images, process data presentation as well as remote control solution. The automation system is DCS system based upon state-of-the-art technology. The model in this study provides useful information and understanding that could encourage widespread use of automation system through PLC program for process control applications using WinCC software and PROFIBUS communication network. This study can be a useful reference for implementation of full-scale automation of continuously operating petroleum process and terminal storage system. |
