AbstractThis study has provided a design and analysis of an automatic control for a petrol transportation pipeline in the petroleum industry. Today, process control, monitoring and fault detection/ diagnosis in such systems have become complex tasks. Their solution requires the applications of advanced control theory as well as modern digital controller and communication technologies. Through the solution of specific problems, namely conventional and state-space method system efficiency, reability and failsafe are thus general improved. The research considered two control theory approaches to achieve the specified performance of the pipeline system. The first control method, Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) control, involves the balance of the level in a storage tank. The second design, state-space method, deals with the liquid's pressure at the end of the pipeline. It shows the development of the control system, beginning from simple states feed back design, moving to feed forward gain design, and finally presents a complex compensator with observer design. Subsequently, simulation tests, using MATLAB and SIMULINK software, were carried out to determine the characteristics of dynamic behavior and steady-state responses of the controlled system.
