AbstractThis study describes work towards the development of a sensor data fusion (SDF) system to assist blind or partially sighted people to move around. The fused information, which is conveyed to users by a voice generator, is constrained by information, which both vision sensors and ultrasonic sensors can extract. The depth recovery method using stereo images captured by 2 vision sensors displaced from each other by a fixed distance, and range detection capabilities from 2 types of ultrasonic sensors with different specifications are employed. Data from these range measurements will finally be fused and given to the blind or partially sighted people. The information given to those people by a voice generator will allow them to direct themselves within the environment. The advantage of this system is that the processing of data can be done using just only a standard PC. The performance of this sensor data fusion system for obstacle detection is finally accessed at different distances by many experiments. The conclusion of this study is based on the experimental results.
