Abstract | Rising concerns regarding agricultural non-point sources pollution have promoted mathematical computer models for examining and evaluating the nature and extent of such effect. In this study GLEAMS model is tested to evaluate model's applicability in simulating soil loss and nutrient export from agricultural land on hydrologic, physiographic, and management conditions of the Rayong watershed. Model calibration and validation are carried out such that each of the three submodels is tested based on qualitative and quantitative assessment for the selected events with considerable lumping of inputs. Sensitivity analyses are performed to quantify site-specific model parameters and relative model responses. Compared to conventional agronomic practices, relative effectiveness of several BMPs is evaluated on an event basis. Results indicate that GLEAMS is capable of producing reasonable prediction of soil loss, runoff N and P nutrient losses, and their concentrations below the crop root zone within the agreed variability of field data. The erosion and nutrient submodels are somewhat erratic but within acceptable limits, yielding good prediction on certain events and only fair on other events. Model prediction from all plots is reasonably well with observed data in comparing the impact of alternate BMPs on soil and nutrient losses reduction. Of all BMPs, combinations of intercropping and contour plowing seem to be most effective in reducing soil and runoff nutrient losses, while no-till reduces nutrient concentrations below the crop root zone. Direction and depth of tillage may have significant influence on BMPs plots of the study area. |
