Abstract | In the present study, sediment transport analysis was carried out in the upper part of Red River network. The main objective is to access the impact of Hoa Binh Reservoir on the morphological changes in downstream courses. Using annual sediment load measured at gauging stations along Red River, sediment budget balance was calculated. On the other hand, a sediment routing model (HEC-6 model) was applied to simulate the deformation of the riverbed under the effect of Hoa Binh Reservoir's operation. A fairly good agreement between the model and prototype during the calibration period has been achieved. Ultimate conclusions from the present study can be stated as follows: a) Since Hoa Binh Reservoir was first closed, the equilibrium conditions in downstream courses have been seriously violated; b) The bed degradation process of Da River will still occur with a decelerating rate; c) Coming with the degradation on Da river is the aggradation process in the river segment from Lo-Hong confluence to Son Tay. This situation would create the negative impact on the flood conveyance capacity, as well as difficulties in irrigation drainage and water supplies in the coming years. |
