Abstract | The rate of labor accidents in construction projects in Thailand has increased rapidly in the last decade. Although safety programs are implemented in some construction companies, accidents continue to plague the industry leading to financial and economic losses and bad publicity. Solutions will depend on identifying root causes in first stage. The objective of this study is to identify major factors that influence occupational injury and formulate recommendations for prevention. Current safety management practices are also examined. The interview data are collected through one-on-one interviews with injured workers. Ninetyeight injured workers were interviewed from thirty-nine construction projects in Bangkok and surrounding provinces. Models of major causes of accidents and factors that influence occupational injuries were proposed and validated for formulating appropriate safety programs. Interviews and observations data were analyzed statistically for the line of best fit. The study indicates that failure to use personal protective equipment, improper loading or placement of equipment or supplies, failure to warn co-workers, and inadequate supports or guards are the major immediate causes of accident. Substandard facilities and conditions are the major factors in occupational injury coupled with workers attitudes and beliefs. Safety programs are proposed to improve safety level of human behavior by providing adequate personal protective equipment to workers can reduce one-third of accident and to reduce risk level of work system by implementing safety prevention programs. |
