AbstractEnergy consumption is a major issue for our world today. This does not only concern industrial and transportation sectors, but also the information technology and networking sectors. This thesis focuses on energy consumption in mobile ah doc networks. These are infrastructure-less networks in which nodes are power limited due to battery lifetime.Reducing energy consumption means extending the network lifetime and therefore extending and enhancing service availability. This can be done through the integration of energy aware mechanisms at different levels of the network protocols and mechanisms. In particular, effective usage of energy for sending and receiving information can help in extending the network lifetime since these operations are considered as the most energy demanding functionalities in network devices. In addition, these new energy aware mechanisms can result in the reduction of carbon dioxide( CO2) footprint of the telecommunication sector. The novel idea is that not only routing saves our world by transforming it to be more green but also facilitates users;fulfilling our communication and even daily needs. In addition,it preserves more cost in operation and result in carbon dioxide( CO2)decline. The idea of power saving through energy aware networking mechanisms can be applied at all the layers of the communication networking model (OSI model). However this thesis will mainly focus on the network layer and more particularly on the routing process. A well-known proactive routing protocol like OLSR is selected for this novel routing algorithm to achieve a goal for energy saving by modifying MPR selection to forward data. The energy efficiency can be applied by designing a network protocol that find routes to forward packets from a source to a destination based on energy efficiency metrics in addition to traditional QoS requirements as delays and throughput.
