Abstract | Vietnam still remains as an attractive destination for both international and domestic retailers. According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the retail revenue in 2011 reached nearly US $90 billion, an increase of 29.3% in comparison with the previous year and contributing 15-16% of the national GDP. It is estimated that the Vietnamese retail market can attain US $113 billion in 2012 and about US $140 billion in 2013. This information partly explains why there is a tough competition between retailers in expanding the market share in Vietnam. As the current leading retailer in Vietnam, Saigon Co.op puts an ambitious target to have a network of 300 food convenient stores, 100 supermarkets, 6 hypermarkets and 4 commercial complexes by the year 2015. The group has established Saigon Co.op Investment and Development Joint Stock Company (Briefly called SCID) as its own developer in order to achieve the development task. The aim of this research is to identify problems among the interdepartmental coordination activities during the process to identify new investment projects at Saigon Co.op and SCID. The Researcher mainly uses the qualitative analysis technique including intensive face to face interviews with key managers from different departments to collect data and information. The results of the research showed that besides different priorities, overloaded working volumes, constrain on professional skills, conflicts on the development strategy’s perception of involved parties are the main root for almost problems occurred in the process. It is expected that the findings may help different management levels recognize the causes and be able to find possible solutions to make the working processes more productive that ultimately contribute to the fast market expansion of Saigon Co.op. |
