Abstract | Nature-based solutions (NBS) keep storm water where it falls, making it available for necessary ecosystem services and numerous other benefits, instead of collecting and conveying it to other locations. There are uncertainties among stakeholders about the benefits of NBS and as a result, many still choose grey infrastructure, such as storm pipes to collect and remove storm water. In order for NBS to become a mainstream infrastructure choice, more research, education and stakeholder involvement are required. Also, the benefits must be assessed and quantified to determine the extent of improvements that NBS may provide; the ex-post evaluation framework presented in this research offers a method to accomplish this. The framework, which may be used to assess the benefits of any existing NBS, was developed with the help of stakeholders and applied the furrows in Rangsit, Thailand. Furrows are similar to the high-water channel concept of the Dutch room for the river project. The framework involves five steps (1) benefit category selection (2) indicator selection (3) data collection and analysis (4) NBS grade and (5) recommendations. |
