AbstractRecently an Electrospinning based rapid prototyping system has been designed. The system is capable of generating scaffolds in controllable patterns with fibers generated having diameters in the range of 150-170μm. The variation of certain process conditions show a possibility of further reducing the size of fiber being generated. This study aims at exploring this possibility of further reduction of fiber by implementation of several techniques based on literature reviews. Static and variable standoff distance techniques have been implemented for radius reduction. Series of experiments have been conducted using these techniques; study the effect of parameters like voltage and humidity on the fiber being generated and the capability of repeatability and reproducibility in multilayered scaffolds. Experimental results show that the radius reduction techniques are capable in reducing the size of fiber down to 109μm for a single pattern. Parameters like voltage and humidity did not show a significant effect on the fiber size. Vibrations exist along Y direction generating thicker fibers as compared to that along X direction. Factors like controlling environmental conditions and exploring the change in solution parameters for obtaining better results should be studied.
