AbstractCooperative communications exploits spatial diversity and provides capacity and performance gain over conventional single- input single-output (SISO) systems. While cooperation can occur at different network layers and time scales, physical layer cooperation at symbol time scales offers the largest benefit. In this thesis we consider a base station which has multiple users over orthogonal channels and being helped by multiple relays. Thus to reduce the resulting complexity and overhead the single relay selection technique is employed. We have reviewed the various relaying technologies which are used for both cellular networks as well as those for the Ad hoc networks. We come up with a relay selection mechanism which selects the relay nodes based on their residual energy after both the signal to noise ratio and bit error rate has been derived. A reliability index was developed for the cellular system which gives the weights to different factors in the relay selection and based on that sum the relay selection is done. Although relay selection work is not relatively new but our work is the first in which we select the relay based on some index. The index is a set of parameters which define the best channel to the destination. This thesis aims to achieve more completeness and reliability for cellular networks by addressing the requirements of high level reliability, energy, and memory communication overhead efficiency. The heterogeneous networks are also studied and their routing protocols and also their security weaknesses are also mentioned and future work for the heterogeneous networks is also proposed.
