AbstractPrecious Shipping (PSL) is one of the largest pure dry cargo ship-owning companies operating in the small handy size sector of the tramp freight market. The company was established in 1989 and listed on the stock exchange of Thailand in 1993. It has a total workforce of about 1500 employees in the ratio of 80/20 between Thai and Indian nationals. About 100 employees are based in office and the remaining are floating staff (sailors). The main purpose of the project was to analyze the factors influencing the Human Resources Challenges at PSL. According, to the research the main problem areas for the shore based staff are stagnation, no proper systems (retirement age/benefits etc.) and an aging management/expat staff. The crew has to face the prospects of potential lay off due to the reduced number of ships and global economic downturn. Based on the findings some of the recommendations to overcome these challenges are; rotation policy, creating smaller teams and phasing out the older employees in office. In respect of the floating staff, PSL could consider shorter contracts; leave wages for senior officers and career enhancement programs.
