AbstractHuman Resources Management has been becoming core factor to decide the success or failure of a business. Among Human Resources Management’s various matters, performance appraisal is the most important one to impact on Human Resources’ performance. This is totally right at the author’s company – Sumitomo Corporation Vietnam LLC. During 21 years operating in Vietnam, HR department of Sumitomo Corporation Vietnam has to face with many complicated problems, especially in recent 02 years – after the company becomes independent from 2010. This research is conducted to identify some points: firstly, performance appraisal system of Sumitomo Corporation Vietnam is standardized, but there are still some disadvantages which need improving. Secondly, performance appraisal system at Sumitomo Corporation Vietnam could not meet all of its objectives, and some steps were not suitable with company’s actual situation. Thirdly, final results of performance appraisal were not fair which made some experienced employees resigned. In conclusion, this thesis summarized the findings of the research, and offered some recommendations for approaches that could be taken to enhance the measurements of staffs’ performance and their efficiency so that they may feel more comfortable with future implementation of performance appraisal system at Sumitomo Corporation Vietnam. Basing on Sumitomo Corporation and HR development strategies of Sumitomo Corporation Vietnam, recommendations focused on 03 major factors that can influence on effectiveness of performance appraisal: operation system, methods, and people in which the people occupied the major weight.
