AbstractIn response to the global initiative to safeguard the planet and sustainable economic development, Bangladesh Bank enforces a complete green banking policy guidelines for the banking and financial sector of Bangladesh. This study would like to explain whether the „quantitative performance‟ of each bank positively correlated with the „qualitative efforts‟ of the bank under the criteria given in the reporting format. Under the green banking policy guidelines, every bank is playing their roles to make the green effort successful. This study examined the comparative green banking performances of the sample banks and then ranked accordingly. Both qualitative and quantitative dimensions have measured and compared critically to find out a relationship of the parameters whether they are independent or dependent to each other. Qualitative measurements show the weighted and ranked performance of each bank based on their efforts in green policy making, green office guide framing, disclosure of information, green marketing, green strategic planning, and Environmental Risk Management plan. Quantitative performances measured and quantified based on the criteria of fund allocation, fund utilization, online banking, in-house environment management, incorporation of environment in Credit Risk Management, employee training, awareness and capacity building activities. A hypothesis based on the relationship of quantitative performance and qualitative green efforts is tested and found a less significant correlation among them. It depicts that banks green performances also depends on various other factors. Policy makers should also think about the other factors for better monitoring and performance measurement of green banking activities in future. Bank‟s profitability, Asset quality, Risk management and fund management efficiency, ownership pattern, corporate governance, employee efficiency and business strategy could be the other factors. Further study could make a better comprehension about those other factors.
