Abstract | The aim of this study is to assess the riverbank failure hazard, vulnerability and risk due to l floods of the Jamuna, Ganges and Padma rivers in Bangladesh. Riverbank failure is a ‘ common phenomenon in Bangladesh, and the high river flow velocity during flood season ; is the main cause of river bank failure in these rivers. A hydrodynamic model in conjunction with GIS tools has been used in this study. Before using the model to simulate flood flow, it was calibrated and verified by using the observed water level data of 1998 and 1997 flood events respectively. Riverbank failure scenarios were evaluated in terms of flow velocity at the toe of rivers for flood events of 100-, 10- and 7.5- year return periods. Questionnaire surveys were conducted to assess socio-economic vulnerability. Risk of the riverbank failure was determined by using the result of hazard and vulnerability. Finally, hazard, vulnerability and risk maps of the riverbank failure were created based on the flood scenario of 100-, 10- and 7.5- year return periods. Locations of high risk of bank failure were identified for immediate mitigation measures. |
