Abstract | Design change is a common problem that exist s in the construction industry. This cost the construction industry huge amount of money every year worldwide. Smooth progress of the construction can only be assure d by properly handling the existing problems in the project. Cont ract administration practices play a major role in solving the contractual problem that exist in the site. This study aims to investigate the contract administration practice that exist in the Thai building construction industry for design change between c ontractors and consultants and the causes and effect of design change. Expert interview were conducted, after thoroughly reviewing the literature and reports of the new airport project, to identify the causes, effects and contract administration practices for design change. Consequently, question naire survey was conducted to understand the practice of these construction participants. The result indicated that the major causes of deign change originated from owner’s requirement in construction stage. Similar ly, most of the causes more prominent in Thai construction industry arose due to problems rippled from design stage. The main effect of design change was found to be increase in project cost. Furthermore, it was found that the contractor’s contract adminis tration practices were significantly lower than that of the consultants among the factors tested as; fami liarity with contract documents, awareness of impact on cost, awareness of impact on time, regular communication and coordination and proper document c ontrol system . The study further provided recommendations for improvement of the practices and hence try to improve the contract administration practice of the contractors and consultants |
