Abstract | This research investigated the impact of climate change in upstream discharge and sea level rise on salinity intrusion and rice production in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam. The calibrated h ydrodynamic model MIKE11 was used to simulate salinity intrusion for baseline period (2000 - 2010) and for future period (2032 - 2042 ) with projected discharge at Kratie in the upstream and projected sea level rise under A1B and B1 emission scenarios. Salinity map was then int ersected with land use map in ArcGIS to determined rice field areas affected by different salinity level. R esult s indicate a decline in non - saline rice area (0 - 4dS/m) by 40 , 000 ha and 50 , 000ha under B1 and A1B scenarios, respectively. The predicted salinity was then used as an input to the trained SALTMED model to assess its effect on rice production in the Winter - S pring season. The rice production of two rice varieties, OM6976 and OM3536, is expected to decrease by 193.8 thousand tons and 137.65 thousand tons under A1B and B1 scenarios for 2032 - 2042 in the study area . The regression function also suggests a threshol d value of 3.75 dS/m and 4.2dS/m for two rice varieties OM3536 and OM6976, respectively. Rice yield can decrease by 15 - 17% per 1dS/m increase of salinity |
