Abstract | The existing channel storage in the west of Bangkok known as "Monkey Cheek" initiated by His Majesty the King Bhumipol is studied to reduce flood damage and improve water quality. The Monkey Cheek operation aims to alleviate flood damage using storage to retain excess water. Since proper gate operation of existing regulators is insufficient to decrease high water levels during spring tide, appropriate operational schemes are then required as guidelines and criteria to mitigate impacts from existing problems comprising tidal flood and poor water circulation at the Mahachai Canal System. In this research, the operation of the existing and the newly acquired two Monkey Cheeks acting as large detention ponds are studied. The distorted fixed bed physical model is constructed to cover the main canals, Mahachai and the nearby canals. The field investigation of water levels and velocities are carried out and used for model calibration. The gate operation of six existing regulators related with tidal cycles and different tidal range are investigated. The results of the research suggest that operation of the existing regulators together with the additional Monkey Cheeks storage are the most appropriate measure to cope with the tidal flood during high tide. This operation comprises closing all six gates 50% of the Mahachai Regulator and fully opening all gates of other regulators during high tide. Moreover, initial water levels in both additional Monkey Cheeks should be depleted to the dead storage prior to beginning of operation with condition of gate opening all time. It shows that the proposed operation can improve the capacity of draining floodwater and the new ponds can be effectively utilized in the Monkey Cheek System. |
