Abstract | The rapid urbanization is associated with the increase of environmental risks in developing countries in which water use and pollution is on the rise of this trend. Since the adverse impacts of water quality degradation in the Huong River in Hue City, Vietnam have been the particular concern, the main objective of this study is therefore to assess the socio-economic aspects of water use and river pollution in order to address or minimize the significant impacts in the context of urban development. The scope of this study is considered within public health and economic impacts in the period of five years. A mixed-method approach is applied by employing quantitative and qualitative data collection methods, including questionnaire, semi-structured interview, focus group discussion and documents review, as source of information for this study. Descriptive statistical, linear regression and triangulation analyses are utilized for data analysis. The results show that the increase in water use and pollution in the Huong River has affected directly to health and economic conditions of local residents whose life is reliant on the river water use. The relationship between river quality change and its impacts on water-related diseases as well as economic loss in fishery were found significant based on the assessment of the urban water use in selected areas. Although river pollution is not new issue in Hue City, there has been limited understanding of the possible impacts on health and economic conditions of local communities. Hence, the study result brings to city government critical information on water use issues and river pollution impacts in order to have implications on management. The proposed environmental management measures (EMMs) were given in which different geographical locations and characteristics are concerned for applying selected instruments. Furthermore, the results can be utilized as a baseline study for deeply understanding and addressing water pollution risks in Hue City and other similar cities. |
