AbstractReinforced concrete residential buildings are a common occurrence in developing countries. Due to lack of expertise in both design and construction these buildings are designed and constructed to resist only gravity loads. These gravity load designed residential buildings can cause heavy human causalities if they are subjected to earthquakes. In this study a typical midrise residential building with reinforced concrete frame and shear wall designed only to resist gravity loads was selected. This residential building is located in Pakistan a country in which severe earthquakes occur. A nonlinear model of this building was constructed in Perform 3D and performance of the building was evaluated using nonlinear dynamic time history analysis and modal pushover analysis. It was found that the building was not able to resist UBC 97 zone 2 site class D earthquakes which are of moderate level. More over the response of the building was dominated by flexure. The results from nonlinear dynamic time history analysis and modal pushover analysis showed good agreement.
