AbstractThis study deals with the seismic safety evaluation of Mae Kuang dam, located in the northern Thailand, through the finite element analysis. Three ground motions were generated by matching the response spectrum of the site provided by the Earthquake Design Standard of Thailand. The mechanical behaviour of dam materials, such as rockfill, clay core, random and filter, was described using Mohr-Coulomb and Hardening soil model. Furthermore, the effect of the different modulus of elasticity is also included in this study. The frequency and dynamic analyses were conducted and the overall dam behaviour is expressed in terms of first-four mode frequency and shape, displacement, stress-strain and acceleration fields. The results show that the maximum crest settlement is 104 cm which is less than the freeboard length provided by the dam. The method used in this study can be used as one of the systematic ways to evaluate the seismic safety of operating earth dams in the northern Thailand.
