Abstract | The descriptive and explanatory type of research with the objectives of analyzing the crop diversification of small farmer households under both irrigation and non - irrigated condition, identifying the determinants of crop diversification at household level of small farmers and assessing the effect of crop d iversification on farm household incomes, was carried out in Yamethin township, Mandalay region under central dry zone of Myanmar during 2013. The survey area consisting two villages as Segyi (near the city) and Ingyikan (far from the city), was purposivel y selected and random sampling method was utilized to select the total samples of 65 households. The field visit involving both quantitative and qualitative data collection in which a set of structured questionnaires and checklists for discussion were used along with field observation. Data analysis was done by using descriptive and explanatory statistics through applying SPSS software version 16.0. The influence of agricultural policy as macro - level factor on crop diversification was found as the CDI o f small, medium and large farmers were increased when comparing before and after policy change in both villages . As the average CDI between the village near the city and the village far from the city were significantly different, it was obviously indicate d as crop diversification was also determined by meso - level factors variation such as water availability, market sources, credit access and chances of attending training due to difference in nearness to the city. With regard to micro - level determinants of drop diversification in the village near the city, outputs of m ultiple regression indicated as p ercentage of irrigated lands, number of training attended and average amounts of credit were significantly correlated with CDI and their regression coefficients were found to be positive (+). This finding revealed that CDI or degree of crop diversificatio n in the village near the city was obviously determined by percentage of irrigated lands, number of training attended and average amounts of credits. In conjunction with the village far from the city, land holding size and average amounts of credits were found as the micro - level deter minants of crop diversification . In this regard, it was stated that under the same meso - level factors, determinants of crop diversification could be varied depends on the micro - level - determinants . In connection with the effec t of crop diversifi cation on farm household income , means of average net incomes between the village near the city and the village far from the city were statistically different each other indicating as crop diversification impact on farm household incomes in my study area. The average net income of the village near the city with higher CDI was 37% increased over that of the village far from the city with lower CDI. |
