AbstractThis study examined people's participation in Wat Dok Chan community radio, Tap Yai Sub - district, Surin Province. The main objectives of the research were to investigate the listener's behavior in community radio; to assess benefits of people's participation in the community radio; to study the ways of involvement, extent, intensity and aspects of people's participation in community radio; to analyze factors affecting people's participation in the community radio and identify problems and prospects; and to suggest recommendations to strengthen people's participation in the community radio. The research was an exploratory type of research applying both the qualitative and quantitative approaches. It was based on a questionnaire survey at household level with a total of 107 households from three communities in Tap - Yai sub - district, Rattanaburee district, Surin Province. The major finding of the research found community members were likely to listen to radio programs around 3 - 4 hours per day. Usually, they listened to five live broadcasting programs that broadcast during time period 04.00 - 10.00 p.m. Community members perceived that they gained high degree benefits in social, economic and institutional aspects from their participation. The level of people's participation in the community radio activities under key development stages including decision - making, implementation and management and M&E stages was quite low in the intensity. Community members more actively participated in the implementation stage rather than the decision - making and the M&E stages. The intensity of people's participation in the community radio activities was associated with the intensity in listening to the community radio programs, perception of the people's satisfaction on news for Buddhist program, degree of benefits gained on ability to organize meeting and training course and ability to design group's regulations. Other factors motivated people's participation consist of their perception on the usefulness of community radio, the motivation from radio producers, the trust in a Buddhist monk and a temple, the good relationship of community leaders and community members and the satisfaction from their participation and expectation of benefits gained. Main problems in their participation were weak performance of organization al management, lack of consistency in training and workshop activities, less the community radio programs from community, lack of technical skills and insufficient equipment for broadcasting. Recommendations were made to strengthen people's participation in key development stages of the community radio and to improve the overall operation of the community radio to become more effective
