AbstractThe main objective of this study was to quantify household food security at household level and its determinant in Tay Yen Tu Nature Reserve, Bac Giang province, Vietnam. Household Food Insecurity Access Scale (HFIAS) was used to obtain food insecurity status. Households were classified into four categories including food security, mildly food insecurity, moderately food insecurity and severely food insecurity with prevalence of 25.28 % , 20.8%, 32.5 % and 20.8 %, respectively . The results from multiple linear regression model showed that ethnicity, distance to market, household size, cropland size, cropping intensity and total income are factors influencing food in security. Moreover, the relationship between livelihood strategies and house hold food security (HFS) revealed that products and sale diversification tend to improve the food security status. Furthermore, using Principle Component Analysis (PCA) and Cluster Analysis (CA), the research found out livelihood strategy of food security category was based on agricultural and natural forest activities, whereas livelihood strategy of food insecurity categories related to commercial forest, off - farm and others activities . Additionally, the results from Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA) and CA suggested that HFS is related to coping strategies. Poor household featured by low education level, land size constraint, living inside of the Reserve are more likely to pursue coping strategies. On the other hand, the research explored that l ack of cultivation land and food insecure induced the poor to convert forest to agricultural land. Moreover, i n conditions of NTFPs scarcity and high market val ue , the poor household s tend to over - exploit NTFPs from Reserve. Finally, this research suggests house hold food security policies should focus on promoting products diversification and market orientation; s upport ing for gardens, hill land renovation; education and infrastructure development. In conservation context, the Government should p romote policy on co mmunity based forest management; especially it is necessary to c learly define t he boundaries of Nature Reserve.
