People's livelihood and wetland resources : a study on Beung Kiat Ngong Wetland in Champasak Province, Lao PDR | |

Abstract | Wetland is a major character of the landscape in nearly all parts of the global land which cover approximately only 6% of the world‟s surface area but provides survival conditions for 20% of the lives on the earth. In Lao PDR, the Beung Kiat Ngong (BKN) Wetland which is located in Pathoumphone district, Champasack province, southern part Lao PDR. It is the first wetland which was ratified as a Ramsar site in 2010 and it supports the livelihood of the local population around 11,50 0 people in 13 villages. This study presents and discuses on the change in wetland area by ensuring the living standard of the community identify the local livelihood assets and assess involvement of local people to participation in the wetland conservati on practices. Land use map 2002 and 2010 were analyzed for the change in wetland area by ArcGIS techniques. Moreover, the livelihood asset and involvement to wetland management focus on two villages, Kiat Ngong and Phapho villages, 90 households in Beung Kiat Ngong wetland by using sampling method. The wetland areas were gradually decreased while rice paddy cultivated area was slightly increased during 2002 to 2010. In overall of livelihood of selected villages are similar but five assets of livelihood among the two villages were slightly different in natural and financial. Respondents in two villages are aware of the wetland resources degradation in present day which compared to 10 years ago and the main expectation for participation in management is the benefit to their income increasing through the good result of the wetland management. However, there are three constraints of people for wetland management participation which are low education level, low income and lake of intensive and practical training related to wetland resources management. As part of that, it is highlight the significance of appropriate as a base of suitable land management and related sectors should provide techniques of rice cultivation to increase rice productivity in organic way and also training related to wetland resources management to local people aim to enhance participation in wetland management. |
