Abstract | Coffee plantation is now one of the key industries in the Lao tian econom y, while also exhibiting growing demand from the market. Agriculture production systems are small scale in individual household level with the primary purpose being family subsistence. I t is important to shift from ‘subsistence smallholder agriculture’ to a ‘subsistence associated with commercial orientation smallholder agriculture to increase production and ultimately income and their livelihood standard . Paksong district is rich in fertile soil formed from the volcanic activities and the temperate climate of area, which makes it suitable for coffee plantation. A group or association is established for farmers to facilitate the development of their act ivities such as exchanging information, trading goods, providing mutual help and networking which will encourages productive activities that results in a strong institution. This study investigates the factors that influence farmers to participate in the farmers coffee association group and the group involvement affect of their productivities, which lead to livelihood improvement. This study focuses on the member s of the coffee farmer group and non- member farmers in two villages, 80 households were sampled in Ban Maisaisomboun and Ban Lak 11 by using purposive sampling method. It was found that , the farmers intend ed to participate in the group in order to develop their plantation skills, increase the negotiation power and enhance the market accessibility. After joining the group, farmers had a signi ficant positive impact on small scale producers, where the producers have improved the coffee quality, gained more access to higher -value markets and earned substantially more income from their production. |
