Abstract | Myanmar government allowed the private sector investment in establishment of Teak (Tectona grandis Linn.j) plantations in the forest lands (i.e. Reserved Forests and Protected Public Forests) under disposal of Ministry of Environmental Conservation and Forestry (MOECAF). Private plantation program generates both positive and negative impacts on forest dwellers. To know those impacts caused by private plantations, this study is conducted in three study sites namely; plantation-0 (without plantations), plantation-2 (during implementing plantations), and plantation-5 (just after establishing plantations), Yedashe Township, Bago Yoma region in which the largest areas of plantations have being implemented. This study is based on five livelihood assets, natural, human, financial, physical and social. Before entering private plantations, four livelihood assets (natural, financial, physical and social assets) were almost the same and not significant different among three study sites, whereas human asset is highest in plantation-5 site. After introducing private plantations, plantation-5 and plantation-2 sites have higher human asset, financial asset, physical asset and social asset, and lower natural assets than plantation-0 site. Regarding satisfaction degree of local people, the result of WAI shows that both study villages are somewhat satisfied on impacts of private plantations. Among three wealth levels, satisfaction degree of poor wealth level is higher than those from rich and medium wealth level. Up to 5-year age plantations, this study reveals that private plantations created job opportunities leading to income generation and improved road condition so as to transport the crops to direct market for local people. It was found that those positive effects can still cover the negative impacts of private plantations on local people so far. |
