Abstract | This study focused on social impacts resulting from the first CDM mangrove reforestation project for Thailand in the Welu River Basin, Chanthaburi.It concludesocio-economic conditions of local people, livelihood activities, perception of local people on condition of mangrove forest, participation of local people in mangrove conservasion and management, and local people’opinion on the CDM project as well as the different expectation of the project. The data collection methods that have been conducted in this research were field observation, household level questionnaired survey, key informants survey, and focus group discussion survey. The study was carried out128 sampled households in five villagesin Bang Chan sub-districts, Chanthaburi located nearby the mangrove forest. Both quantitative and qualitation information was gatheredfrom these methods.The result idicated that mangrove forest playa significant role to contribute for local people. the local people relied on the forest because of thier settlement, occupation, and food. Aquaculture farming and aquatic fishing was main occupation of respondents in the study.Most of respondents extracted resources from forest for consuming within household such as for making fishing tools, charcoal making, house construction activity, and other purposes. Perception of local people were different, depended on their settlements and their aquatic activities locations. Mangrove issues including of tree species and animal in mangrove, the benefits of mangrove, and mangrove reforestation activities were generally realized by the local people, while the methods of mangrove conservation, the laws of mangrove, and the action in National preserve forest were difficult to understand for the general local people. Almost respondents participated in mangrove conservation and management activities by different types of participation. Thus, most of them were willing to participate in the CDM mangrove reforestation project to increase mangrove forests and get benefit from the project. The opinion on four dimensions of social impacts resulting from the project were likely increasing in opportunity employment, household income, quality of infrastructure, and understanding in mangrove reforestation and management. In contrary, there was a group of people strongly resisted that CDM project because of their negative experiences. As a result, it was found that there wereboth positive and negative impactsfrom the project. For the positive impact, there were consisting of new employments such as hiring mangrove plantation, food processing among women group, eco-tourism business, increasing income from hiring plantation and the new employments, increasing quality of electricity and transportation, and enhancing the knowledge of mangrove issues as well as conservation and management methods. However, there were several negative impacts resulting from the CDM project, such as loss of traditional occupations, reduction in income,higher expenses, loss of tradition cultures, unsustainability, increasing forest encroachment, losing complexity in forest, difficulty in project achievement and land expropriation. |
