Abstract | Agriculture is the most important sector in Thailand which is facing the climate change related problem. The climate change events puts pressure on farming activities, cr op pattern, resources in area. Also, in Doi Mae Salong (Northern part of Thailand) where upland farmers are more vulnerable to the changing climate and that necessitate for them to adapt to respond with extreme events which is increasing year after year. T his study attempted to understand farmers’ perception on climate change and the measures taken as adaptation practices. There are three objective of study: to investigate the perception of upland farmers on climate change, to assess the impact of climate c hange on upland agriculture and to study the farmers’ adaptation practices to changing climate situation. The study was based on interview of 90 farmers’ household from Anglor - Lohyo village and Heako villages in Doi Mae Salong area . According to the stud y, majority of farmers perceiv ed that there is climate change. There is only respondents’ age that influen ces farmer s ’ perception on climate change . The main changes perceived by the majority of farmers were increased temperature and heat . It also leads to the increasing frequency of drought in summer. T he amount of rainfall has decrease d compared to 5 to 10 years ago. Rainfall pattern was observed to vary from season to season and actual rainfall duration has become shorter . The impacts of climate change a re different depend upon farmers activities, area location, dominant crop and adaptive capacity. The impacts on agriculture that observed by farmers include cultivation practices changed , crops and fruit tree particularly rice cropping are damaged , crop pr oduction decrease d , water scarcity increase d , soil fertility decrease d and also increase extreme climate event. Majority of farmers cope with climate change situation by adapt on agriculture practices, i.e. change growing time, change new crop type, change cultivation or agronomic practices. For related problem, farmers adopt simple measures to response the change, which it similar compared to both villages groups. |
