AbstractThis study analyzed the fire management system and the socio - ecological system in the c ommunity forests of Siwalik region in Makwanpur and Chitwan district of Nepal with the objective of assessing the user’s perception on forest fire issue , current s tatus of forest fire management and finding out socio - ecological variables that have effect on activeness of user group on fire management. The study revealed human activities are the only so urces of fire and fire is yearly phenomenon in community forests in the area. Despite the successful prevention and suppression of fire in some community forests, the sustainability of the practice is in doubt. Users of community forest do not differ much in their level of understanding about forest fire. Further analy sis of SES of CFUGs disclosed that activeness of any CFUGs in forest fire management is not the result of any single element but combination of many. Diverse elements have varying level of influence on activeness of CFUG on forest fire management. Therefor e, any policy formulation should recognize the diversity of variables, their level and direction of influence and should aim to enhance the positive effect reversing negative effects. The government and CFUGs shou ld create condition for sustainable fire ma nagement with long term goal.
