Abstract | Automatic control and monitoring of a Micro Hydro Power Plant (MHPP) is a very useful technique in today’s context, where most of the MHPPs are located in rural areas with limited skilled employees. This research focuses on the development of a MATLAB model for an MHPP , with a low head of up to 6 meters, situated at AIT WEM Lab . After the validation of the model, a control algorithm with the use of Simatic S7 PLC is implemented to control the MHPP using flow control by adjusting the servo - valve positioning through a continuous PI control, and the use of a dump load to maintain a constant loading effect across the generator terminal for voltage and frequency regulation . The type of generator used for th e MHPP is an Induction Gener ator . The system can run on both stand - alone and grid - connected mode s of operation. An HMI has been implemented using WinCC to provide a user friendly interface for both control and monitoring purpose. The connection between MATLAB and WinCC has been achie ved with the use of OPC. Various simulations are performed to see the performance and behavior of the MHPP under various loading conditions and transmission line failures. |
