Abstract | In hard disk drive (HDD) industry emphasizes to increase the capacity of HDD. One component of the HDD suspension must follow the progress in HDD technology, this is a tongue gimbal (TG). In this research it was proposed to develop the TG forming machine, which deformed the flat TG into a curved TG. Generally, the TG forming process has two problems. The first problem is elastic springback recovery during punch unloading, which leads to a springback radius of formed TG. Therefore, it is difficult to estimate a final TG angle. The second one is the residual stresses that leaved in formed TG after finish its forming process. The residual stress can be induced the premature through cracking, reduce fatigue strength, make distortion and angle variation. Therefore, simulation model in finite element analysis (FEA) was proposed to address two aims. The first was to improve prediction of elastic springback to predict the exact final TG radius. The second aim was to reduce the residual stresses that occur in TG during its forming process. To reduce the residual stress mechanically, changes were made in the reverse forming process. The research showed that the simulation results were matching with experimental results in grate deal. The differences were about 7 % when considering the worst case. From the simulation model it was found that the prediction of elastic springback could predict in three parameters, which were punch positions, punch strokes and spring stiffness. And the residual stresses were reduced more than 60 % reduction from the base line model. |
