AbstractProduction planning is one of the most important actIvItIes in the operation of a refinery. It ensures company profitability through efficient utilization of the factory while meet other business requirements. In this study, a mathematical programming model for production planning in a refinery is formulated with several raw materials, run-modes for multiple products and periods. Although this problem can be solved by some conventional methods, the problems are limited to very small sizes and the solution times are quite long. In this study, a genetic algorithm is applied to find good solutions for the production planning model. The solution is encoded as a composite genome which contains different data types and evolving parameters. The chromosome is designed using the composite representation provided as a built-in class of GAlib. Main GA parameters have been examined and the best values are reported for this problem. A comparison is made between the results from GA and those from CPLEX algorithm using cases varying in number of periods. The results show that the proposed GA with its near optimal solution and efficient calculation time is a suitable algorithm for solving problems in real-case size. Re-initialization technique is used to improve the efficiency of the GA. The study shows that real-cases can be solved with good results in reasonable time
