AbstractAn e-Learning system becomes widely used in the academic community because of several advantages of learning anywhere and anytime. Most e-Learning systems in Thailand try to imitate web-based learning so that students can access online courses via Internet without adaptation based on student's behavior. Therefore, it is a challenge to make e-Learning systems to be more "adaptive". This research presents a proposed system which includes major adaptive features. The two main parts for developing adaptive e-Learning system are student modeling and adaptive hypermedia. The initialization and updates on a student model are implemented by applying the Dempster-Shafer theory. For adaptive hypermedia, the proposed system applies all techniques from adaptive navigation support technology which are classified as direct guidance, link sorting, link hiding, and link annotation. The proposed system is implemented on "Introduction to Java Programming Language" course, using LearnSquare open source software. The proposed system is evaluated to measure user's satisfaction by comparing the use of an adaptive e-Learning system with a non-adaptive e-Learning system. Participants are then asked to complete a questionnaire to rate each system according to a set of criteria such as speed of use, ease of use, user confidence, adaptive capability, and overall satisfaction. The results demonstrate that the adaptive e-Learning system provides better flexibility and capability than non-adaptive e-Learning system. It also leads the students to better learning results
