Abstract | After its great success in Internet and having many commonalities with Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET), Peer-to-Peer (P2P) technology has motivated MANET researchers especially for file sharing area. However, few research works have been going for P2P based real time video streaming. It is really a challenge to provide a continuous playout for a live video streaming in such environment due to frequent link failures and dynamic topologies. To combat these challenges, we have studied P2P protocols for media streaming for both Internet and MANET domains and proposed a novel P2P based solution for a scenario where a video source wants to distribute a live video stream among interested nodes. In order to make an efficient design for the MANET, we have proposed a cross-layer system instead of using off-the-shelf P2P approach. Furthermore, we have used Multiple Description Coding (MDC) in the design. For each description, we create and distribute pieces to the closest peer which shares the pieces among other interested peers using the overlay proposed by Multicast Overlay Spanning Tree (MOSn protocol. Finally, we have compared performances of our design against original MOST. It is found that in most of the cases the proposed solution substantially increases the video quality |
