AbstractRoad tunnel underpass are more widely used in order to undertake traffic congestion situation across the major city of Thailand because it has no super structures above the ground and can be constructed at a restricted right of way. Thus, underp ass are the most preferable for environmental friendly aspect and scenery preservation. It also appropriates for reducing the complexity of multilevel in case that there is an existing flyover. Underpass are implemented by various government agencies such as Department of Highways, Department of Rural Road and Bangkok Metropolitan and Administration and each agency are adopted different criteria and constr uction method for the construction. Therefore, the review are conducted as to give the details descripti on, difference and similarity and geotechnical features by divided into Bangkok subsoil condition and provincial subsoil condition. Diaphragm wall are the most of the earth retaining structures employed to the d eepest section because of water tighness. Roof slabs are precast concrete except for Udomsuk underpass which is the first one of post-tensioned slab. Buoyancy forces are undertaking by two method, a) anchored pile b) thickening base slab. Vertical Clearance for most underpass are 5.00 - 6.00 m. Maximum embedded depth for the pile and diaphragm wall are 16.00 - 25.00 m. Top-down construction method are applied for Udomsuk underpass and proven that the construction period can be shorten by the assistance of this technique without a special machine required only the carefully stage construction planning.
