AbstractGenerally, faecal sludge (FS) management system included three main section: (i) on-site sanitation systems (OSSs), (ii) FS collection/transportation and (iii) centralized treatment system. Up to present, there are many reports of environmental pollution and health problems relating to improper management or treatment of FS especially in most developing countries. To mitigate above situation, the innovative sanitation technologies to treat FS are required. The objective of this research was to study the potential technology of the solid-liquid separation and the disinfection technology in order to reduce the volume of FS and also product the hygienic sludge as a reusable material for agriculture proposed. The application of the results on the FS vacuum truck was also discussed. Vacuum filtration was selected as the pre-treatment process of FS to separate solid and liquid. In order to compare the percentage of water content reduction, the experiment of FS with/without adding Ascaris ova and polymer was conducted. After the first stage of solid and liquid separation, the experiment of the microwave radiation disinfection was conducted. The microwave power levels of 136, 440, and 800 watts were used with 50g of FS sample at contact times of 5, 10, 15, and 20 min. The average percent of water reduction of FS with/without polymer were about 5.08±2.97% and 6.18±3.32%, respectively. The FS with polymer found to be easy to separate water from the solid part because the flocs forming in the bigger size and it could reduce the problem of decreasing effective area on fabric filter and the sample clogging. Moreover, most Ascaris ova was mostly found in the FS floc which indicated that the raw FS mixed with polymer could help to remove Ascaris ova from FS sample. Based on results obtained from this study, the operating condition for FS solid-liquid separation is about 1.5cm depth of FS with 10 min and operation cost was only 0.003 USD/L of FS. The results of optimum condition for microwave radiation disinfection is 4.80kJ/g of dry FS or the microwave power at 800 watts at the contact time of 5 minis appropriated dose for reduction of total coliform, E.coli and also inactivation of Ascaris ova.
